He served as a Flight Lieutenant with the Royal Air Force (RAF) during WWII. After the War, he studied medicine, then later became a surgeon in rural Jamaica. He was High Commissioner to Great Britain from 1974 to 1978, moving among prime ministers, presidents, and queens.
He overcame racism and prejudice in British society at large, to become the darling of the British media. In fact, through his athletics, and later as a diplomat, Arthur Wint helped put Jamaica on the world map. He is memorialized by a statue outside the National Stadium on a road also named after him, Arthur Wint Drive, in Kingston, Jamaica.
Arthur Wint was sometimes called “The Gentle Giant” – he was very tall (6ft. 5½ inches, 1.97m) – and was a gentle, humble man. Arthur Wint was sometimes called “The Gentle Giant” – he was very tall (6ft. 5½ inches, 1.97m) – and was a gentle, humble man. His lifelong motto was “You make your choices.” He made choices that allowed him to touch the lives of people from all stations and walks of life, from the fishermen on Negril Beach with whom he played dominoes, to royalty and senior politicians with whom he carried out his nation’s business.
Arthur Wint believed strongly in persevering and pushing through adversity to succeed at his goals. In spite of all his successes -- gold medals, a statue and a road named for him -- Arthur Wint remained a very unassuming person all through his life. He was a loyal friend, family man and always very patriotic.
