After a brief illness, Dr. Arthur Wint passed away on October 19, 1992. It was National Hero's Day in Jamaica.
Dr. Arthur Wint was given an official funeral, nationally televised, with a Service of Thanksgiving at the University Chapel.
The service was attended by the Prime Minister of Jamaica; the official Opposition Leader; former athletic friends and rivals. People from all walks of life, from all over Jamaica and the world attended - busloads of hospital staff from hospitals where he had worked; and hundreds of well-wishers, many of whom watched from television monitors in overflow tents.
Memorial Services were held for him in the United Kingdom and in the United States of America.
He was affectionately called “The Gentle Giant"
