The day of Arthur’s birth -
A son was born to us, he arrived on the 25th of May 1920 and we named him Arthur Stanley. Some weeks after his arrival, the Rev. Robert Johnstone, my revered tutor, came to Plowden Hill Church on a Sunday morning in July and baptized our son. We had a lovely morning service and a very happy day. There was a very happy relationship between us and a loyal and devoted people.
- Memoirs of Rev. John S. Wint
Arthur was the second of five children of Reverend John Wint, a Presbyterian Minister, and Hilda Wint (nee Smith), a school teacher. He was born on May 25, 1920 in Plowden, in the central Jamaican parish of Manchester.
He was a natural athlete and by the time he moved to boarding school at Calabar High School in Kingston, he was already showing promise. Before turning 18, he was competing internationally. His family was always supportive, but ensured neither his schoolwork nor his service to others suffered.
In 1949 he married his long-time sweetheart from Jamaica, Norma Marsh. They had first met at Excelsior School, where he had taken shorthand classes to be near her before he left for the War. In 1951 their first daughter, was born. He and Norma, a Company Secretary and Soroptimist, had two more daughters in 1956 and 1958. They later had eight grand children.
Arthur enjoyed his family and they would look forward to annual holidays during his hard earned vacation. This usually involved trips to the beach or the mountains.
He had been a mischievous child and brought that playfulness to his children and grandchildren. He could just as easily be found playing hide and seek in the garden or discussing life's challenges with them.
