It is interesting - the role models, the persons that come to mind when trying to determine how to chart the course forward, or find that extra “oomph” of motivation needed during trying times. That’s where I find my grandfather—he holds a permanent seat in my heart and mind. A seat from which he emanates dignity, integrity, poise and service. When I think of legacy I think of him and what he has demonstrated to us, his family, through his life and love.
My grandfather did many things and was very accomplished—this we know. But growing up with him, I did not know this. I could not have, because those accomplishments did not define him. They were not what made him who he was, it’s who he was, that allowed him to accomplish these many things. It is that spirit that I remember even now, as we celebrate his 100th birthday.
The man, not so much the accomplishments. The example of serving many, but doing so, humbly. Of keeping composure and bringing calm in the midst of chaos. Of working diligently at all things, a spirit of excellence.
No doubt I wish we had more time, but it seems the little we had was enough to live with me forever. So cheers Grandpa, thanks for paving the way.
