It is such an honour to remember my Uncle Arthur, my mother’s brother, on the 100th Anniversary of his birth. I knew Uncle Arthur long before I met him. I spent time with Grandma and Grandpa Wint at Cascade in Hanover and their ‘drawing room’ was full of photographs of their three (3) sons who all served in World War 11. However, it was Uncle Arthur who occupied more space in this special room. Grandma made sure to let me know that my Uncle Arthur was the winner of a Gold Medal at the Olympics in Helsinki. As Jamaica’s first gold medal winner, she had displayed his many trophies, medals, certificates and prizes everywhere.
My early memories go back to summer holidays spent at a beach cottage in Runaway Bay where he taught me to swim and to build sand castles using objects found on the beach. Now, upon reflection, many of my memories of Uncle Arthur have a ‘beach connection’ – there was Negril and ‘Cosmos’ for a swim and conch soup and there was Lucea and its many quiet coves for swimming.
His gentleness and easy, non-judgmental manner won the hearts of everyone, including my two children, Gillian and Richard.
We often talk about the parties in Linstead and his
ever present cigarette and Red Stripe beer.
He lives forever in our hearts.
One love!
